The festival petitioned the National Safety Council and the FAA to allow the flight of hot air balloons, which was approved only two days before the festival.

Jimmy Archer

He received a medal from the National Safety Council in 1931 after using prone pressure resuscitation to revive two truck drivers who had been overcome by carbon monoxide in the Union Stock Yards.

Sandford Sellers, Jr.

He served on the National Safety Council from 1942 to 1943, as headmaster of the Elgin Academy from 1943 to 1945, as superintendent of Morgan Park Military Academy from 1945 to 1949, and as Director of Education for the 4th U.S. Army Corps in San Antonio, Texas from 1950 to 1962.
