After the 1898 season, Orioles owner Harry Von der Horst acquired a controlling interest in the Brooklyn Bridegrooms ballclub and moved most of his star players and manager Ned Hanlon over to the Brooklyn team.
It is named for famous Baltimore Orioles baseball player, manager and owner Ned Hanlon, who led the team in the National League to three championships in 1894, 1895, 1896 for the "Temple Cup" in the pre-World Series era and before the 1901 formation of the American League.
According to Spink, Allegheny's manager Ned Hanlon traveled to Presque Isle in the dead of winter to sign him, crossing the ice on the harbor during a snow storm.
