Riding Mountain National Park and Duck Mountain Provincial Park lie to the north, are part of this parkland, and are also an extension of the escarpment.

Along the way it passes through the communities of Cartwright, Glenboro, Carberry, Neepawa, McCreary, Ste. Rose Du Lac, Grandview, Gilbert Plains and the City of Dauphin, Manitoba (although a bypass via Highway 5A is available).

The segment of the highway between Neepawa and PTH 3 at Cartwright, via Glenboro and Carberry, was previously designated as PR 258, while the segment between the U.S. border and Cartwright was formerly PTH 28.
