After two EPs released on their own Wisdom label won airplay on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, and enthusiastic reviews in New Musical Express, Sounds and Melody Maker, they were signed by Demon Records offshoot F-Beat, for whom they released 2 albums, 1991's Boat and 1993's Smothered.
The Russian album includes liner notes in Russian, from text that was originally in English by Roy Carr of the NME.
The show (2 x 1 hr, made by Diverse Production and directed by Paul Yule), was based around the former New Musical Express journalist Paul Morley learning how to create a piece of classical music.
As Stuart Cosgrove noted in the New Musical Express (March 14, 1987): "The Fearties are more critical than The Pogues, their Scotland is not a place to be eulogised…it's a home whose myths are savagely demolished…they use found percussion but stripped of Test Dept's artiness…"
Copies were initially given away at the band's London Marquee Club first anniversary concerts, but when these were cut short further copies were given to fan club members, and 250 were given as crossword prizes with the New Musical Express.
