In his early twenties Beard moved to New Orleans to study advanced painting at The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.
He entered advertising and publishing design upon graduation and has taught at the Ray School in Chicago and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.
It remained preserved in storage for 42 years and in February 2008, a gift was made to the Bascom Center for Visual Arts in Highlands, NC by Dorothy and Jimmy Coleman and Dian and Tom Winindger in honor of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts.

Inspired by the model of Thomas Eakins and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Ozols founded the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts in 1978 to gather together artists and aspiring artists and to teach Classical techniques, stressing working from life.
