The barrier is designed to reduce the risk of storm damage to some of the region's most vulnerable areas - New Orleans East, metro New Orleans, the 9th Ward, and St. Bernard Parish.
The Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) is an 832-acre (3.4-km²) site owned by NASA in New Orleans East, a district within New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States.
