1942 in Mandatory Palestine

6–11 May - The Biltmore Conference, held in New York City at the prestigious Biltmore Hotel with 600 delegates and Zionist leaders from 18 countries attending, makes a fundamental departure from traditional Zionist policy and demands "that Palestine be established as a Jewish Commonwealth" (state), rather than a "homeland." This sets the ultimate aim of the movement.

On the 22nd floor of the hotel was the grand ballroom, called the Cascades; Bert Lown was the conductor in the hotel's early years.


Bert Lown

He began as a sideman playing the violin in Fred Hamm's band, and in the 1920s and 1930s he led a series of jazz-oriented dance bands (the most famous being the Biltmore Hotel Orchestra), making a large number of recordings in that period for Victor Records.

John McEntee Bowman

Bowman was responsible for the building of the golfing country club, the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York and counted the New York Biltmore Hotel in New York City, the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, in Los Angeles, California, the Coral Gables Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida, and the Sevilla-Biltmore Hotel in Havana, Cuba as part of his extensive hotel holdings.
