New York City Police Riot

This new police force was to be controlled by a 5-man board of police commissioners, appointed by the Governor of New York, and at first comprised Simeon Draper, James Bowen, James W. Nye, Jacob Cholwell and James S.T. Stranahan.


John F. Dickson

He remained in command of the precinct until Captain Joseph Dowling, who had formerly sided with Mayor Fernando Wood and the Municipal police force during the Police Riot of 1857, replaced Dickson upon joining the Metropolitan police in 1859.
