Arthur Wakefield Carkeek (1843 – 1897) was a member of the Armed Constabulary in the New Zealand Wars, and was one of only 23 recipients of the New Zealand Cross for gallantry.
Chief among his awards was the New Zealand Cross, the highest colonial gallantry award available in New Zealand.
The first New Zealand Cross (New Zealand Cross (1869)), instituted in 1869 to recognise gallantry during the New Zealand Wars of 1860 - 1872.

The medal was instituted to provide recognition to members of the local volunteer forces (who, at the time, were not eligible for the Victoria Cross).
He received the New Zealand Cross on 31 March 1886, and published fragmented memoirs, as well as a fanciful 'Maori history' of the wars.
