Her father is a New Zealander and her mother is English; the family’s tribal affiliations are Ngāti Wai and Ngāti Whātua.

It is known principally as the site of a Māori battle fought in either 1807 or 1808 between the Kaipara branches of the Ngāti Whātua, Te-Uri-o-Hau and Te Roroa iwi on one side and the Ngāpuhi iwi on the other.
Of Te Uri-o-Hau and Ngāti Whātua descent, Paraire Karaka Paikea was born in Otamatea, in the Kaipara area of Northland.
Ngāti Awa originally occupied the area, but were evicted and replaced by Ngāti Whātua around 1640 CE.
