Parts of the Upper Ngakawau Gorge are the only known habitat of the rare Celmisia morganii.
The Stockton Plateau Hydro Project is a proposed hydroelectric power station planned on the Ngakawau River in the northern section of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Some of the water used will be drained from the Stockton coal mine which is expected to reduce the pollution levels in the Ngakawau River.
