The depot for the Sheboygan-Fond du Lac Railroad needed to be built about 1 mile (2 km) north of the community because of the grade needed for trains to climb the Niagara Escarpment.
The Lewiston–Queenston Bridge, known in Canada as the "Queenston-Lewiston Bridge" is an arch bridge that crosses the Niagara River gorge just south of the Niagara Escarpment.
In 2005, Harmer co-founded PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land), an organization which campaigned to protect the Niagara Escarpment from a proposed gravel development which would see some parts of wilderness near the escarpment removed.

The Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is a Conservation Authority responsible for the protection and management of the Credit Valley watershed, surrounding the Credit River from its headwaters above the Niagara Escarpment to the point at which it meets Lake Ontario at Port Credit, Mississauga.
It slopes gradually on the west side, more steeply on the south and east and merges with the Short Hills Provincial Park area of the Niagara Escarpment on the north.
Its mission is to "conserve the UNESCO-designated Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve as a continuous natural environment and scenic, working countryside".
On a clear day, residents have unobstructed views across the lake and may see the mist rising from Niagara Falls as well as the Niagara escarpment.
The Trafalgar Moraine is approximately 20 km long, 30 m high and 4 km wide, extending from the Niagara Escarpment north of Nelson to Streetsville in an east-northeast trend; at the Oakville boundary, the trend shifts northeast.
