Parra is the daughter of the physicist, mathematician and self-titled "anti-poet" Nicanor Parra.
Isabel Parra is also the sister of the famous folk singer Ángel Parra and the niece of the famous poet Nicanor Parra.
As a photographer, he has exhibited photographs of Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges, Nicanor Parra, amid others, in the National Library of Chile.
In 1933, he entered the Instituto Pedagógico of the University of Chile, and qualified as a teacher of mathematics and physics in 1938, one year after his first book, Cancionero sin Nombre, appeared.
The Polish writer Bruno Schulz (1892–1942) and his classic The Street of Crocodiles are mentioned several times in the novel, as is Nicanor Parra (1914-), whose 1954 book of antipoems is translated by Charlotte Singer and read by the mysterious Jacob Marcus.
