In 1683, the Dutch pirates Laurens de Graaf (know locally as "Lorencillo") and Nicholas van Hoorn ravaged the region during their capture and looting of the port city of Veracruz.

At the very end of 1682, a curious vessel made its appearance in the Caribbean.

This vessel, in the armament of which the commander of the Dover Castle took part, had left England the previous year, intending to trade with the Spaniards in Cadiz then in America.


Jan Willems

Based out of Petit-Goâve, Willems participated in a number of expeditions against the Spanish during the early to mid-1680s with other well-known privateers including Michiel Andrieszoon, Thomas Paine, Laurens de Graaf, Nicholas van Hoorn and Michel de Grammont.
