In January 2008, it was merged with the Ämter Karrharde, Süderlügum and Wiedingharde, and the municipalities Niebüll and Leck to form the Amt Südtondern.
This class were specifically used for the AutoZug (car ferry trains) between Niebüll and Westerland operated by DB AutoZug.
It is thought that the name is derived from the words nei and bel, where the former means "new" and the latter is based on the ancient Danish term boli, "settlement" (confer Niebüll and Nieblum).
