After Worms (1 490 ha), Nierstein (783 ha), Alzey (769 ha), Westhofen (764 ha) and Alsheim (704 ha), Bechtheim is Rhenish Hesse’s sixth biggest winegrowing municipality, and one of the biggest in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The winemaking centre belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Nierstein-Oppenheim, whose seat is in Oppenheim.
It therefore has much history in common with the neighbouring places of Nierstein, Schwabsburg and Oppenheim; along with them it is also in the Verbandsgemeinde of Nierstein-Oppenheim.
A cycle of frescoes in the chapel at the Dalberg-Herdingschen Castle in Nierstein, Hesse, made his reputation.
The nearest railway stations are each some 7 km away from Mommenheim: Nackenheim and Nierstein on the Mainz–Mannheim railway line, and Nieder-Olm on the Mainz–Alzey line.
The best-known white wine area is the Rhine Terrace near Oppenheim and Nierstein.
