The organisation has been compared by some to the Professional Chess Association, the body established by Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short as an organisation under which to play their 1993 World Championship having broken away from FIDE, the official governing body of chess.
They include the first full-length work on the Polgár sisters, published in 1992 shortly after Judit Polgár broke Bobby Fischer's record as the youngest grandmaster, and a 1993 biography of Nigel Short, a leading British player who was for a time ranked world No. 3.
It consisted of three main Grandmaster groups and the Honorary group, comprising former A group champions; groups A, B and C were won respectively by Levon Aronian (on tiebreak from Magnus Carlsen, after both finished with 8 points), Sergei Movsesian (9½ points, one point ahead of Nigel Short and Étienne Bacrot) and Fabiano Caruana (10 points, two ahead of Dimitri Reinderman and Parimarjan Negi).
Going into the final round, host nation grandmaster Nigel Short was the only leading player to win, defeating Mark Hebden to capture clear first place with 7½/10.
He won the Bunratty Masters in 2011, ahead of Nigel Short, whom he defeated in their individual encounter.
Gyula Sax participated twice in a row in the Candidates Tournament after qualifying at the Subotica Interzonal in 1987 and at the Manila Interzonal in 1990 respectively but was eliminated in the Candidates in 1988 by Nigel Short (+0=3−2) and in 1991 after extra-time by then sixty years old Viktor Korchnoi (+1=6-1; +0 =1-1 rapid chess).
