4 unusual facts about Nim

Nim

A version of Nim is played—and has symbolic importance—in the French New Wave film Last Year at Marienbad (1961).

At the 1940 New York World's Fair Westinghouse displayed a machine, the Nimatron, that played Nim.

This game is commonly played in practice with only one heap (for instance with k = 3 in the game Thai 21 on Survivor: Thailand, where it appeared as an Immunity Challenge).

Shin Yong-mok

Shin was influenced by older-generation activist poets, so-called "poets of the masses" (minjung shiin), such as Kim Nam-ju and Shin Kyeong-nim, and genuinely anguished over the problem of the path literature should take in society and history.

Diori Hamani International Airport

The Air traffic control for NIM is operated by the ASECNA, which bases one of its five air traffic zones for the continent at Niamey.

Dr. NIM

The "game board" is actually a very simple Digi-Comp digital computer with memory switches (the three-lobed levers) that 'remember' what was done & their starting position is the program that plays Nim.

Hu Nim

Hu Nim was born in 1932 (25 July 1932 according to some sources) in the village of Korkor, Kampong Siem District, Kampong Cham Province to a Sino-Khmer family.

LEMO

The LEMO 00, a miniature push-pull 50Ω coaxial connector, is used as front panel connectors in the Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) and Computer Automated Measurement and Control (CAMAC) modular electronics standards used in instrumentation for nuclear and particle physics, where it is used as a replacement for BNC connectors in high density designs (because the LEMO connector is much smaller in size than a BNC).

Misère

The game of Nim is usually played using the misère play condition, as in the film Last Year at Marienbad.

Nim Chimpsky

When Terrace ended the experiment, Nim was transferred back to the Institute for Primate Studies in Oklahoma, who later sold him to the Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates, a pharmaceutical animal testing laboratory managed by NYU.

Nim Li Punit

Nim Li Punit is sometimes known as Big Hat or Top Hat; the name is Kekchi Maya language for "Big Hat", referring to the large elaborate head-dress on a stela sculpture found on site depicting one of the site's ancient kings.

Qiu Guangming

According to Robert P. Crease, as the focus of the Institute shifted, no new personnel were hired to continue historical research, making Qiu the last surviving member of this group at NIM.

Return to Nim's Island

Return to Nim's Island is a 2013 Australian adventure-fantasy film directed by Brendan Maher and starring Bindi Irwin, Matthew Lillard, Toby Wallace and John Waters.

With her father, Jack Russo (Matthew Lillard) away on business Nim and Edmund must save the island from poachers trying to steal the animals and take them away to the mainland to sell them.
