The first festival was held in 1984 in the French town of Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle (Senpere in Basque); it is well known for its Herri Urrats celebration, which remains one of the largest.

Second Battle of the Aisne (16 April–9 May 1917), main component of the Nivelle Offensive
The village of Craonne on the plateau of Californie was the site of bloody fighting on 16 April 1917 during Nivelle's failed Offensives.
Promoted regimental lieutenant-colonel on 21 July 1813, after the battles of Nivelle and the Nive, Elphinstone commanded the engineers at the crossing of the Adour and the siege and battle of Bayonne.
