Shibari has a strong presence in the works of some renowned contemporary artists, mainly photographers, like Nobuyoshi Araki in Japan, Jim Duvall in the United States and Hikari Kesho in Europe.
These include 'Viva Lolita' in 2008; a show inspired by Vladimir Nabokov's iconic novel, Lolita, which brought together eighteen international contemporary artists such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Trevor Brown, Nick Ruston, Charlotte Beaudry, Nazif Topcuoglu and Young British Artist, Mat Collishaw.
Touted as the subtle sort of fetish erotica that relies on the drama of melancholia instead of on pure eroticism as secret springboards for erotic imaginings, trance painting is deemed by de Veyra to have been culled from the art of Blue Period Picasso, Diego Velázquez as much as Raphael, Chagall, Giorgio de Chirico, Nobuyoshi Araki and the "defamiliarization" technique of the Russian Formalists.
Araki's life and work were the subject of Travis Klose's 2005 documentary film Arakimentari.
