It is presumed to have been named by Governor James Stirling after Rear Admiral Sir John Harvey, who in 1818 was Commander in Chief of the West Indies Station while Stirling had served in that region.
Named by members of HMS Snipe, following an Antarctic cruise in January 1948, for Vice Admiral Sir William Tennant, then Commander-in-Chief of the America and West Indies Station.
In 1952, the Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral Sir William Andrewes, became the initial Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic.

Thrupp was promoted to commander on 17 September 1858, and served as commander aboard HMS Desperate in the North American Station and the West Indies, from 30 July 1862 to 7 November 1863.
Between them, they were assigned to the China, East Indies, African, North American, and the Pacific Stations.
Royalist served both her commissions on the North America and West Indies Station, being commanded between 1865 and 1866 by Maurice Horatio Nelson, son of Thomas Nelson, 2nd Earl Nelson and great nephew to Horatio Nelson.
