In 2002 he competed in the New Zealand Marist Brothers Spillane rugby union tournament for the North Harbour side and was named in the team of the tournament.
The North Harbour Rugby Union NPC team won the Ranfurly Shield in 2006 for the first time in North Harbours history against Canterbury.
In 2009 after two seasons with Sale in the Guinness Premiership, McAlister returned to New Zealand, where he resigned with North Harbour and the Blues, with the intention of regaining his place in the national side.
