4 unusual facts about North Tyneside Loop

Central Station Metro station

Metro services from this station replaced some routes that had formerly been operated from the mainline station towards Benton and Tynemouth via the North Tyneside Loop.

Longbenton Metro station

The station itself predates the Metro light rail system; it was opened in July 1947 by the LNER, which operated electric suburban passenger services on the North Tyneside Loop, the predecessor of the Metro's Yellow line (see Tyneside Electrics).

North Tyneside Loop

The North Tyneside Loop refers to the railway lines in North Tyneside from Newcastle upon Tyne via Wallsend, North Shields, Whitley Bay, Backworth, Benton and South Gosforth back to Newcastle.

Northumberland Park Metro station

Backworth was the only station on the North Tyneside Loop not included in the system, apart from Heaton station (which was on a part of the alignment not used in the Metro).
