Democratic Partnership was founded for the Northern Ireland Forum election of 1996 by the Peace People group, independent peace activists and a number of people from the labour movement, including former Northern Ireland Labour Party Member of Parliament David Bleakley.
In 1996 Fergal Caraher's sister Maria was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum in Newry and Armagh, but she did not stand in the subsequent Northern Ireland Assembly election, 1998.
The next attempt to form a labour organisation in Northern Ireland was the Labour Coalition, which won seats on the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996.
In 1996, she joined with Monica McWilliams in petitioning established political parties to include women among their candidates for the Northern Ireland Forum.
It was nominally formed by Robert McCartney, formerly of the Ulster Unionist Party, to contest a by-election the North Down by-election, 1995 and then further constituted to contest the 1996 elections for the Northern Ireland Forum.
Buoyed by the relative success of the previous election and the influx of new affiliates the UIM put up 40 candidates in 18 seats in the Northern Ireland Forum elections of 1996, representing its most high profile election campaign.
