6 unusual facts about Nymphaea


Cahul

Every two years, at the beginning of July, in Cahul takes place an important folk music festival, "Nufărul Alb" ("White Nymphaea").

Elophila obliteralis

The larvae feed on a wide range of aquatic plants, including Hydrilla verticillata, Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Nymphaea and Potamogeton species.

Harper Mausoleum and George W. Harper Memorial Entrance

Harper's mausoleum includes structural elements such as columns whose capitals feature palm leaves, a cornice with a design of a vulture and sun disk, and lotus flowers are depicted on the double bronze doors to the mausoleum.

House with Chimaeras

The Italian sculptor Emilio Sala was responsible for both the internal and external sculptural decorations, such as mermaids, dolphins, and frogs on the roof of the building, sinking ships and hunting trophies on the exterior walls, and exuberant interior decorations, such as grand stairways and chandeliers depicting huge catfish strangled in the stems of lotus flowers.

Kawaguchi Green Center

The garden was established in 1967, and contains fountains, plum trees, and topiary pieces, as well as greenhouses with collections including banana, bougainvillea, lotus (Nymphaea), orchids, and succulent plants.

The larvae feed on various grasses growing in water, including Nymphaea species and rice.
