The new parish of Grayswood was formed from parts of the old parishes of Witley, Chiddingfold, Haslemere and Thursley in 1901.
Among these was Philip Carteret Webb, FRS, born 1700, solicitor to the Treasury 1756–65, M.P. for Haslemere 1754–67.
This was soon followed by the planning and erecting of Down Hall, Essex ; Lythe Hill, Haslemere, Surrey ; and Crawley Court, near Winchester.
James Cholmeley Russell (1841–1912), a barrister, financier, property developer and railway entrepreneur, lived at The Woodlands, Merrow and latterly Longdene House, Haslemere, where he died on the 29 August 1912.

In 1890 Wright had purchased an estate named Lea Park between Godalming and Haslemere, Surrey, and the adjacent South Park Farm from the Earl of Derby, which included the Lordship of the Manor and control of Hindhead Common and the Devil's Punch Bowl.
