January 1-March 26, 1911 - Thirty-eight Black Hand victims are killed by Black Hand assassins, many by the unidentified assassin known only as Shotgun Man, between Oak Street and Milton Street in Chicago's Little Italy.
It is also one of the three roads entering Vancouver from the south, along with Knight Street and Oak Street.
Going roughly from the river to the lake, the 17th Ward includes the Carrollton Riverbend area, Upper or West Carrollton with the noted Oak Street commercial area, the Leonidas neighborhood, Palmer Park at Carrollton and Claiborne, Northwest Carrollton, Hollygrove and Dixon neighborhoods (known for producing a number of rap music artists, such as Lil Wayne, Mack Maine, Fiend, and DJ Hollygrove.
The four routes curve to the north-northwest along Oak Street and pass the Uncle Remus Golf Course.
The district generally encompasses the neighborhood surrounding Haight Street, bounded by Stanyan Street and Golden Gate Park on the west, Oak Street and the Golden Gate Park Panhandle on the north, Baker Street and Buena Vista Park to the east and Frederick Street and Ashbury Heights and Cole Valley neighborhoods to the south.
Following the completion of the Pfizer research facility in 2005, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. and several leaders of local civic groups began pushing the Connecticut Department of Transportation to study removing the existing Oak Street Connector and replace it with a four-lane landscaped boulevard with access to local streets and businesses.
