3 unusual facts about Russell Street


1952 VFL season

In May 1952, as part of its promotion of the Burt Lancaster movie Ten Tall Men, the management of the Melbourne cinema The State Theatre on the corner of Flinders Street and Russell Street (now known as the Forum Theatre) measured the height of the ten tallest VFL players.

Madeleine Orr

Charles Orr was a caterer and hotelkeeper by profession, and he and his wife ran a succession of inner city hotels in the early twentieth century including the City Court Hotel and Tattersall's Hotel, both in Russell Street, Melbourne.

Russell Street, Melbourne

Russell Street is lined with established, green leafy trees and is the address of many restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, offices, 5-star Grand Hyatt Melbourne Hotel and luxury French label Chanel who have a flagship store on the corner of Russell Street and Flinders Lane.


Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy

The College, on the corner of Russell Street and Victoria Street adjacent to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, was officially opened on 27 April 1927 by Her Royal Highness Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Duchess of York, during a royal visit to Australia by her and her husband, His Royal Highness Prince Albert, the Duke of York, later King George VI.

Emperor Group

In Hong Kong, the group has become the second largest landlord of ground-floor shop spaces on Russell Street in Causeway Bay where retail rents have risen to become the second highest in the world, ranking only below that of Fifth Avenue in New York.

Flinders Lane, Melbourne

The Lane is also home to luxury French label Chanel who have a flagship store at the "Paris end" of the city, on the corner of Flinders Lane and Russell Street.

Gwynns Falls Trail

It and the bike lanes turn west onto Ostend Street, passing by M&T Bank Stadium, home stadium of the Baltimore Ravens, and crossing underneath Russell Street.

Lonsdale Street, Melbourne

At the corner of Lonsdale and Russell Street is 24 hour Greek restaurant Stalactites, which is famous, amongst other things, for being the celebration place of Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis during his 2006 Australian Open campaign.
