At one time the village had two grocery stores and an active fraternal presence with the International Order of Oddfellows being housed in a two-story frame structure.

The Oddfellows Hall, in Loftus, was built in 1874 as the offices and meeting place of the local Oddfellows society.

Subsequent to the failure of Bonnie Prince Charlie's uprising, in 1789 the two Orders formed a partial amalgamation as the Grand United Order of Oddfellows.
