In 1836, Hoffman defended Richard P. Robinson at his trial for the murder of Helen Jewett, and got his client acquitted.

After the removal of the federal deposits from the Second Bank of the United States in 1833, he abandoned Tammany Hall and the Democratic Party, and joined the Whigs.
On February 1, 1851, Hoffman was nominated by President Millard Fillmore to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California created by 9 Stat.
In 1836, he prosecuted Richard P. Robinson for the murder of Helen Jewett, but lost the case to Ogden Hoffman, his predecessor in the D.A's office, who appeared for the defence and secured Robinson's acquittal.
