Located within the equatorial rainforest region, it is of enormous importance to the local population (the people of Oguta, Orsu, Nkwesi and Awo) as a source of water, fish, tourism and also as an outlet for sewerage.

On November 28, Lt. Col. A. F. Montanaro led 87 officers, 1,550 soldiers and 2,100 carriers in four axes of advance to Arochukwu from Oguta, Akwete, Unwuna and Itu on a counter-insurgency campaign.
It is bounded on the north by Ibi-Asoegbe and Aji towns, on the east by Amiri and Otulu towns, on the west by Ozara town, and on the south by Oguta town.
They are an Igbo sub-group located west of Orlu town to south of Ozubulu, north of Oguta and in the general areas around Oru, Orsu, Orlu, Njaba, Ihiala, Nnewi south and Oguta LGAs.
