His football skills were evident there as well as he quarterbacked SLI to an undefeated season in 1943 and a New Year's Day victory in the Oil Bowl.
As a senior, he was named by both, the Daily Oklahoman, and the Tulsa World as an all state honorable mention, and also played in the Oil Bowl.
He played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the Oil Bowl in which he got Defensive MVP following his senior season.
