The Geology Museum collection consists of over 17000 rock and mineral samples from Southern Africa including many type samples and samples from the Tsumeb area of Namibia, the witwatersrand reefs and Okiep area
The town is on the site of a spring that was known in the Khoekhoe language of the Nama people as U-gieb (large brackish place) and was originally spelled as O'okiep.

From December 1896 one of them was allocated to O'okiep for shunting and local work, including service as construction locomotive while the Nababeep branchline was being built and then as branchline power after the line was opened in late 1898 or early 1899.
