They were named after anthropologist, naturalist and artist Olive Pink, who lived in the town for almost 30 years and died in 1975.
She also met Albert Namatjira during this period and purchased two of his early paintings.

In her later years, Pink concentrated on botanical pursuits and established the currently named Olive Pink Botanic Garden in Alice Springs.

During this period, she met with the artist Sidney Nolan and his wife, with whom she discussed her experiences with the Aborigines.
