In August 1961 Mäki was beaten in two rounds by Davey Moore for the World Featherweight Title in Helsinki.

A year later Finnish Olympic Committee did not sent him to 1960 Summer Olympics since Mäki was a member of the leftist Finnish Workers' Sports Federation.

February 1964 he beat Conny Rudhof for the European Boxing Union light welterweight title.
