Some of the Bulgarian Empire's most significant historical records are stored in the church, including Omurtag's Column, Asen's Column and the Border Column from Rodosto from the rule of Khan Krum.
In 828 the last Friulian duke, Baldric, was removed from office by Emperor Louis the Pious at the Imperial diet of Aachen, as he had not been able to defend the Pannonian frontier against the troops of Khan Omurtag of Bulgaria.
Many sources (Chatalar and Tarnovo inscriptions) and memorial inscription are preserved, which testify for the reconstruction of Pliska, the building of a new palace with a large throne room and a temple of Tangra.
In 827, the Bulgars under Great Khan Omurtag invaded and conquered the Croatian Principality of Southern Pannonia (Savia) and parts of territories to the north of Savia, that were a part of Frankish kingdom.
