In 2007, a memorial was dedicated to both the crew of the Amakusa and Lt. Gray overlooking the town of Onagawa in Sakiyama Scenic Park.
The town takes pride in the fact that it still has beaches with "squeaking sand", which has apparently become rare in Japan due to human induced environmental changes.
