Flying Albatros D.III (serial 2251/17), Festner was killed in action on 25 April 1917, near Oppy.
The attack was conducted by the 15th Brigade of the 5th Division and the 94th Brigade of the 31st Division, which advanced on a front extending from north of Oppy Wood to Gavrelle in the south.
There is a museum dedicated to Oppy in Moore street, and a statue of him winning the 24-hour Bol D'Or race in Paris in 1928.
