From the last quarter of the nineteenth century, he used his wealth to promote public interest in symphonic and "semi-classical" music by founding the Oratorio Society of New York and funding construction of the Naumburg Bandshell, which honors his name, on the Concert Ground of the Central Park Mall.
Kent Tritle was appointed as the Society's 11th music director in January 2006, succeeding longstanding director Lyndon Woodside, who died the previous year.
He found his chief successes in concert performances of Handel oratorios and works by Bach, often appearing as a soloist with the Oratorio Society of New York.
