On 14 June 1881, Andagao was renamed Calatrava during the term of the controversial military governor of Romblon, Don Jose Fernandez de Terran (1880–1883), after the Military Order of Calatrava.
The Templars, however, were unable to hold Calatrava, and the king found further volunteer warriors when Raymond, Abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Fitero offered himself.

Tello was in charge of repopulating the valley of the Guadiana, in the region extending from the Tablas de Daimiel wetlands to the estuary of the Jabalón River as part of an agreement with the Order of Calatrava pursuant to which Tello was entrusted with the task of bringing cattle and Moorish slaves to the region of Calatrava la Vieja.
The same year, Ciudad Real was attacked by knights of the Order of Calatrava under the leadership of its Grand Master, 20-year old Rodrigo Téllez Girón, who supported the claims to the throne by Alfonso and Juana.
