4 unusual facts about Order of Polonia Restituta


Academy of Music in Łódź

Among the former rectors of the Academy were such luminaries of the Polish music scene as Kazimierz Wiłkomirski (1945-1947), cellist, composer, conductor and brother of Wanda Wiłkomirska, as well as Kazimierz Sikorski (1947-1954), recipient of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1937), composer of symphonies, overtures and concertos.

Antoni Laubitz

On 10 March, 1938 he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta for 'outstanding contribution in the field of social work' .

Ludwik Birkenmajer

In 1883 he won the prize of the Kraków Academy in geometry, and later received Swedish Order of the Polar-Star, and Polish Commander Cross of the Republic of Poland (1924).

Order of Polonia Restituta

After the Partitions of Poland the Order was resurrected in the Duchy of Warsaw, bestowing upon its recipients the title of hereditary nobility and requiring donations to a Warsaw hospital.


Przemysław Gosiewski

On 16 April 2010, Gosiewski was posthumously awarded the Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta and on 29 April 2010, the City Council in Ostrowiec made him an honorary citizen.

Stanisław Kulczyński

Kulczyński was awarded the Order of the Builders of People's Poland (1964), the Order of the Banner of Labour 1st class and the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
