The house gets its name from two large raintrees (Koelreuteria paniculata), which stand on the property.

Alice Kessler-Harris is the R. Gordon Hoxie Professor of American History at Columbia University, in New York City and former president of the Organization of American Historians.
Dr. Trani is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London; Phi Kappa Phi; the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies; the Organization of American Historians; and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations; and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Grenville Clark Fund at Dartmouth College.
In 2006, the Organization of American Historians gave Ward their Friend of History Award for his outstanding contributions to American history: Over the last twenty years Geoffrey Ward's writings on American History have had a greater influence and reached a wider audience than those of any other American writer and historian.
