Thence he was led to Oriyur (ஓரியூர்), some thirty miles northward along the coast, where he was executed on 04 February 1693.
It is a Christian pilgrim center, as it is home to the martyrdom of St. John de Britto, a Portuguese Jesuit better known as ‘Arulanandar’ in Tamil.
He was beheaded at Oriyur on Feb 4, 1693 by a regional king for preaching about Jesus Christ and establishing churches.

There is a shrine to Brito in Oriyur, where he is a significant figure worshipped by the Kallar, Maravar and AgaMudayar castes who together are often referred to as the Theavers.
