Increasing numbers in the mid-eighteenth century meant a move for the School to its present site on land next to the battlefield where, in 642 AD King Oswald was defeated by King Penda.
The son of an auctioneer and estate agent, Halliday was brought up in Welshpool in Powys, and attended Oswestry School in Shropshire.

After he retired, he founded the Oswestry School of Music and its Festival of Village Choirs.
