In 1960 he choreographed two mixed trios Othello after Verdi's Otello and A Medieval Morality that were the first to receive top honors from IAAA in that category.

A highly versatile singer, he also appeared in the title roles of La Monnaie's productions of Hamlet, Rigoletto, Hérodiade, and Le roi Arthus, as well as singing Count di Luna in Il trovatore, Iago in Otello, and Baron Scarpia in Tosca.

Famous Otellos of the past have included Tamagno, the role's trumpet-voiced creator, as well as Giovanni De Negri, Albert Alvarez, Francesc Viñas, Giuseppe Borgatti, Antonio Paoli, Giovanni Zenatello, Renato Zanelli, Giovanni Martinelli, Aureliano Pertile, Francesco Merli, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Frank Mullings, Leo Slezak, Jose Luccioni, Ramón Vinay, Mario Del Monaco, James McCracken, Jon Vickers and Carlo Cossutta.
She participated in several television productions for RAI such as Le nozze di Figaro, La Traviata, Otello, and Falstaff.
She did, however, take part in a number of important American premieres, including those of Verdi's last two masterpieces, Otello and Falstaff.
In 1887, Maurel created the role of Iago in Otello at La Scala, Milan, and then, in 1893, he created the title role in Falstaff, again at La Scala.
In March 1997, she performed the role of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello.
Although Verdi's aim to write the music for an opera based on Shakespeare's King Lear never came to anything, (except that a libretto for Re Lear does exist), Boito provided subtle and resonant libretti for Verdi's last masterpieces, Otello in 1887 (which was based on Shakespeare's play Othello) and then Falstaff in 1893, the composer's second comedy, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor and parts of Henry IV.

The theater ran up to 15 opera productions a year, including local premieres of Beethoven's Fidelio and Verdi's Ernani, Macbeth, Il Trovatore and Othello.

From 1999-2001, he was Resident Conductor at Florida Grand Opera (FGO) where he continued developing his knowledge of the lyrical repertoire, the occasion also to partner with artists such as Deborah Voigt, Renata Scotto, Emily Magee, Irina Mishura, Bliss Hebert, in new productions of Tosca, Otello, Carmen.
Highlights of his tenure included performances of Otello and Tannhäuser with American-born soprano Helen Donath and concert performances of Parsifal with Renata Scotto.
His commitments for 2003 included: Madama Butterfly at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, Andrea Chénier and Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro Regio di Torino, La Gioconda and Don Carlos at the Zurich Opera, Otello at the New National Theatre Tokyo, Aida at the Liceo of Barcelona.
He died after a heart attack at the age of 63 in 2005, while driving home from a performance of Verdi's Otello at Glyndebourne.
The first opera performance took place on October 23, 2009 with Verdi's Otello, conducted by Graeme Jenkins and starring Clifton Forbis, Alexandra Deshorties, and Lado Ataneli.
In 2002 he sang the title role in Verdi's Otello for the first time with Utah Opera, a role which he sang frequently over the next six years in such houses as the Teatro Arriaga, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Opera Ontario, Opera Lyra Ottawa, and the Manitoba Opera Association.
She went on to play Desdemona in Otello at the San Francisco Opera, Violetta in La traviata at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera.
The town is, however, close to elections, and the disappointed policeman, unemployed again, is made the candidate of the Monarchist National Party, which opposes the current Mayor and uses Otello's case as an evidence that the current government does not operate justly.

Fearing for the consequences this information might cause if revealed to the public, Otello decides to finally give up, and on the next day's trial he admits, pretending, that he was wrong in fining the Mayor, a mistake that was caused by a broken Odometer, and that such a man as the Mayor himself can't but be always right.
