In 1998 she was granted tenure and in 2003, and again in 2012, she was awarded the prestigious Ottinger Award for outstanding teaching, scholarship and service.
Ottinger joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1858 after which he came to Utah Territory in 1861.

In 1970, he ran in the Democratic primary for the nomination for U.S. Senator from New York against Ted Sorensen, Richard Ottinger and Paul O'Dwyer, but was defeated by Ottinger.
