In 1128, after the Pomeranian duke Wartislaw I had subdued the area, the Wends were baptized by Otto of Bamberg on his second Pomeranian misson, while Wartislaw was also present in the stronghold.
When bishop Otto of Bamberg made his missionary journeys through Pomerania in the early 12th century, he was already received in Wilin in a fortified royal house.

It was founded in 1127 by Saint Otto, Bishop of Bamberg, as a community of Augustinian Canons, on a site near a church consecrated in 880 by Englmar, Bishop of Passau, in honour of Saint Peter.
Windberg Abbey was founded by Count Albert I of Bogen with the assistance of Bishop Otto of Bamberg on the site of the original seat of the Counts of Bogen.
