In July 2006, John J. Byrne, the father of Overstock's chief executive, resigned from the board of directors after a public airing of the elder Byrne's unhappiness with his son's crusade against naked short-selling.
It was also featured on a commercial for Overstock.com, as well as being featured on the first episode in Season 5 of the television programme, Brothers and Sisters.
Byrne's son Patrick M. Byrne bought a 60% interest in the Internet retailer D2: Discounts Direct, changing its name to Overstock.com.
