2 unusual facts about Père David's deer

Lü Zhengcao

In 1985, to support the return of the critically endangered Père David's deer to China, Lü Zhengcao helped found and chair the China Milu Foundation, now known as the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation.

World Association of Zoos and Aquariums

Zoo-bred animals of several species listed by IUCN as “extinct in the wild” did survive in zoos and have been reintroduced to parts of their former range in recent years (Partula spp., Père David's deer EW, Scimitar-horned oryx EW).

Argali

In Tibet, the argali must regularly compete with other grazing species for pasture, including Tibetan antelope, bharal, Thorold's deer and wild yaks.

Père David's vole

Dorsal pelage is dark brown, often nearly black and the ventral pelage is gray, sometimes brown.

Schomburgk's deer

Laurent Chazée, an agronomist with the United Nations, later identified the antlers from a photograph he took as coming from Schomburgk's deer.

Thorold's deer

Thorold's deer has traditionally been included in the genus Cervus, and genetic evidence suggests this is more appropriate than its present placement in the monotypic genus Przewalskium.

Willow Tit

This is supported by mtDNA cytochrome b sequence analysis; within Poecile, the Willow Tit is part of a group of Eurasian "typical chickadees" that includes also the Marsh Tit, Père David's Tit, and the Songar Tit (Gill et al. 2005, del Hoyo et al. 2007).
