The Sanskrit version, written by Vasubhaga Datta, is known to have originated from the Paishchi Prakrit original, Brihatkatha ("Ocean of stories") by Gunadhya.
The influence of Paisachi over Konkani can be proved from the findings of Dr. Taraporewala who, in his book Elements of Science of Languages, Calcutta University,he ascertains that Konkani shows many Dardic features which are found in present day Kashmiri and Punjabi.

The former name is apparently free from Iranian or Paisaci influence since Maharashtra location was far removed from the north-west division of ancient India.
